Who we are

Peace United Church of Christ is a congregation in covenant with the United Church of Christ (UCC).  Peace Church was founded in 1905 as Friedens Evangelical Church, eventually becoming Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church, and then, ultimately Peace United Church of Christ. “Peace” is the English word for Friedens.

The United Church of Christ was formed in 1957 with a merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Churches and the Congregational Christian Churches. As a uniting Church, the UCC recognizes and respects other worship traditions. The denomination is one that believes that God is still speaking. The ongoing inspiration of the Holy Spirit guides us to new directions while yet upholding the best of our Christian tradition.

Historically, the UCC has stood on the cutting edge of social justice. It was in the courts in support of slaves on the Amistad. It was the first to ordain an African American, the first major denomination to ordain women and gays/lesbians to the pulpit. It has led the way on environmental issues, and on behalf of tribal people in the United States.

Peace United Church of Christ is proud to be a part of the history of the UCC. We, too, hope to make a difference in our part of the world! Toward that end, we are an Open and Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ. (For more about that, click on Open and Affirming.)
